Mechanical Design of clutches and Clutch Control modelling (Takeoff control) of a DCT Gearbox

Activity and interventions

  • Mechanical design of clutches
  • Control system modelling

Technical environment

  • Matlab / Simulink
  • Prototyping tools
  • Dual clutch gearbox technology

Key figures

  • 5 projects members (3 PSA & 2 CS)
  • Project duration: no end date (first prototype in July 2010)

Context

Our client is always looking for new technical solutions and new products to meet its customers’ wishes. The dual clutch gearbox increases the quality of the car, and several competitors on the market have already started the development of their own dual clutch gearboxes.
The project started in 2009 by analyzing the market and the different gearboxes already available. Because the advantages of this kind of gearbox became apparent, our client decided to start with the development of their own dual clutch gearbox internally.

ALTEN's achievements

The following tasks were performed:

Mechanical Design of clutches for the DCT

  • Calculation of dissipated energy during takeoff.
  • Definition of the clutches’ design according to energy requirements.
Clutch Control Design
  • Design of a clutch control strategy based on vehicle performance and dissipated energy.
  • New clutch control design approach with coupled strategy: engine speed control + clutch torque control.

ALTEN's Added value

  • Matlab / Simulink skills.
  • Control System & Gearbox experience.
  • Mechanical design background.
  • Flexibility in terms of priority changes.
  • Creative approach of control system.
