New hardware platform for next-generation professional satellite communication equipment.

Activity and interventions

  • Hardware Design
  • Signal Integrity simulation
  • Thermal analysis

Technical environment

  • High-Speed Digital Design
  • Design for Testing
  • ECAD-MCAD integration

Key figures

  • Number of project members: 10
  • Project duration: 18 months
  • Production: 2000 units per year

Context

The aim of the project is to develop a new Demodulation board (Demod). Demods are devices that receive and process data coming from satellites. They are used, for example in gateways.
Part of a hardware platform, Demod acts as an extension board and is controlled by the host board, running on Linux. The incoming raw data is processed on-board in real-time and output is transferred to the host over a high-speed serial interface.
The new device should be flexible enough to cover several market sectors and fulfill customer requirements for the next 5-7 years.

ALTEN's achievements

Hardware Design:

  • Technical specification definition
  • Architecture design
  • Schematic design and PCB layout
Signal Integrity simulation:
  • Pre-layout “what-if” analysis of key interfaces
  • Post-layout board-level analysis
Thermal analysis:
  • Cooling solution investigation

ALTEN's Added value

  • Top-down structured design approach.
  • Increase level of technical confidence with signal integrity and thermal analysis.
  • Understanding and taking into account other aspects of the design cycle (firmware and software development, testing, manufacturing).
  • Design tools integration (ECAD, Simulators, FPGA).
  • “First time right” attitude.
