ALTEN Masterclass: Turning potential into opportunity

Breaking into the Life Sciences industry can be a challenge for recent graduates. While they often possess strong scientific knowledge, employers are looking for professionals who can quickly adapt to highly regulated environments and contribute effectively to complex projects.

To help bridge the gap between academia and industry, ALTEN developed the Masterclass, a dedicated program that combines expert-led training, practical experience, and continuous support. Designed for recent graduates holding a Master’s degree in fields such as Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, and related Life Sciences disciplines, the Masterclass equips participants with the skills, confidence, and industry knowledge needed to launch a successful career.  With four to five sessions organised each year in Belgium and around ten participants per cohort, the program offers a unique opportunity to take a first step into the Life Sciences sector while benefiting from a structured learning path.

Recruiting for potential

The Masterclass is aimed at Dutch-speaking young European graduates residing in Belgium who are eager to start their professional journey. While academic excellence is important, ALTEN’s recruitment approach goes beyond qualifications and technical expertise. The program is designed for candidates who demonstrate curiosity, motivation, and a genuine willingness to learn. Previous industry experience is not required. In fact, many participants join straight after completing their studies, sometimes with only student jobs or internships on their CV.

“For a recruiter, the Masterclass is also an excellent way to identify motivated, curious individuals who are genuinely committed to their professional development. It serves as a valuable bridge between the academic world and the realities of the Life Sciences industry.” – Elea, Talent Acquisition Partner

This focus on potential allows ALTEN to identify promising talent and provide them with the tools they need to thrive in a demanding and fast-evolving sector.

Learning the fundamentals of Life Sciences

The Masterclass offers a comprehensive introduction to the regulatory, quality, and operational standards that shape the Life Sciences industry.

Participants receive training on key topics including:

  • cGMP Regulations
  • Quality Control
  • Deviation Management
  • Risk Management
  • Qualification & Validation
  • Change Control
  • CAPA
  • Sterility Assurance
  • Project Management
  • Good Engineering Practices
  • Good Documentation Practices
  • Soft Skills

The objective is not only to provide theoretical knowledge but also to ensure participants understand how these concepts are applied in real industry environments.

“As a trainer, it’s exciting to see how quickly participants grow during the first week. The theoretical training equips them with the key knowledge and industry insights they need to fully benefit from the rest of the programme and confidently step into their future roles in Life Sciences.” – Margot, Masterclass Trainer

Through interactive sessions, practical examples, and real-life case studies, participants develop both technical and professional skills that prepare them for the challenges of the Life Sciences industry.

Preparing consultants for real-world challenges

One of the key strengths of the program is its practical dimension. Beyond classroom learning, participants complete a practical internship of at least six weeks, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and discover the realities of working in highly regulated environments. This combination of theory and practice helps accelerate the transition from graduate to consultant.

From a business perspective, the Masterclass also provides a valuable response to industry needs. By developing consultants who already have a solid understanding of quality systems, compliance requirements, and industry standards, ALTEN helps clients access talent that is ready to contribute from the start.

“The ALTEN Masterclass turns a cohesive group of motivated graduates into client-ready consultants through hands-on training and real-world challenges. Our masterclass consultants gain the skills to contribute immediately, while clients benefit from fresh, agile talent prepared to deliver impact from day one.”

– Thibaut, Coach Business Manager

The program creates value for everyone involved: participants gain confidence and experience, clients benefit from well-prepared consultants, and ALTEN continues to develop the next generation of Life Sciences professionals.

A career opportunity from day one

What truly sets the Masterclass apart is the long-term perspective it offers.  Participants join ALTEN with a permanent contract from the beginning of the program and benefit from the support of recruiters, trainers, business managers, and talent development teams throughout their journey.  Most importantly, every participant who completes the Masterclass is offered a client assignment. In many cases, the first mission naturally follows the internship completed during the program, creating a smooth transition from training to professional practice.  This approach allows graduates to build experience quickly while benefiting from a supportive environment that encourages continuous learning and development.

To better understand the impact of the Masterclass, we spoke with one of our participants, Fien, about her experience.

What motivated you to join the ALTEN Masterclass?

Fien: As a recent graduate, I was attracted by the structured start of the ALTEN Masterclass. The initial training week offered by ALTEN seemed like a great way to gain insight into the industry and build knowledge before starting on a project. I also liked the fact that you are guaranteed a project for the first six weeks, allowing you to gain hands-on experience from day one. In addition, the consulting aspect appealed to me because it offers the opportunity to discover different roles and industries, while gaining a wide range of experience and finding out what suits you best.

What were your expectations before starting the program?

Fien: My main expectation was to learn as much as possible, discover different aspects of the industry, and put the knowledge and skills from my degree into practice. I was looking forward to gaining real-world experience and further developing myself professionally.

What was the most valuable part of the Masterclass for you?

Fien:  The most valuable part was the first week of training. It provided a solid introduction to the company and the consulting environment, while also allowing me to start the journey together with other Masterclass participants. Having a group of peers who were in the same situation made the transition from student life to a professional environment much more enjoyable and comfortable.

What advice would you give to future candidates?

Fien: Be open to every opportunity and try to absorb as much knowledge as possible. The Masterclass gives you access to many experienced professionals, so make the most of that by asking questions, learning from different people, and staying curious. Being flexible and eager to learn will help you get the most out of the experience.

The ALTEN Masterclass reflects ALTEN’s commitment to developing future industry experts and supporting young graduates as they take their first steps into the professional world.  By combining high-quality training, practical immersion, and personalised guidance, the program enables participants to transform academic knowledge into real-world expertise.

For many graduates, the Masterclass is more than a training program. It is the beginning of a career in Life Sciences, built on learning, experience, and opportunity from day one.
